One focus of the Advent season that is easily overlooked is this: Almighty God provides all that we need. Advent is an “in-between” time. On the one hand, we look back to the miracle of Christmas, as the long-awaited Messiah and Saviour of the world came was born humbly, sharing our humanity. But the word “Advent” means “coming” or “appearing”. As we remember Jesus’ birth long ago and far away, all Christians are invited to remember that Jesus will come again as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
All of this tells a wonderful piece of the Gospel truth: God provides for His people!
When Adam and Eve were naked and afraid, God provided clothing to take away their shame. God provided more food and water in the desert than the people would ever need, as long as they remembered to be faithful and not take His provision for granted. For people who needed to hear God’s call, He provided prophets. For a nation surrounded by mighty enemies, He provided kings. For strangers, widows, and orphans, God’s Law required that all faithful people would share and provide for their needs. And, for the many people over many generations who were longing for God’s solution to the problem of sin, God sent His Son so that we could be forgiven and share in the everlasting life of God.
God provides. But when we’re in need, do we remember? In this Advent issue, you’ll read stories of God providing in the most amazing ways when we are faithful to follow Him.
