The Bishop of The Arctic will appoint an assisting Minister on mission in the Cathedral Parish of Iqaluit, Nunavut.  The title and some duties will vary with experience, as this position could be a very good curacy for a mission-minded recent graduate, or a good position for an experienced priest who wanted an opportunity to focus on community outreach without much administrative responsibility.

The Cathedral parish is located in the dynamic capital city of Iqaluit, which is the center of government and the hub of sports, music, and healthcare for Nunavut.  The parish includes the unique igloo-shaped Cathedral in the heart of Iqaluit’s downtown (with adjacent parish hall and office/residence building), as well as St. Simon’s Church over the hill in Apex.

Our mission is to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ and to enable all Christians for ministry. We are looking for someone to join the Cathedral team in that mission, with particular focus on building up the English-language congregation; this will require extensive time spent outside the church, and investing heavily in people and relationships. This is the sort of small-town parish ministry that will require spending less time in your office and more time in the bleachers at hockey tournaments, being seen and chatting it up with people at concerts and community events, and cheering from the sidelines in the high-school gym.

As a unique challenge facing the English congregation, the demographics in Iqaluit have changed.  In the past, people moved “all the way” to Iqaluit; they bought a house, raised their kids, and stayed into retirement. Today, the English-speaking population of Iqaluit is much more transient: people come on a 2 or 3 year contract, make their money, and move away.  The need for community, connection, and purpose in life is greater than ever, but we’ll need an energetic and outgoing leader with fresh eyes to help show us the way.  It is of the utmost importance that the minister will be able to articulate the saving hope of the Gospel in a winsome way to those who don’t have a church background and who haven’t given much thought to the things of eternity.  Ideally, you could provide a reference to a previously-unchurched person that you have discipled through their conversion or re-dedication to Christ.  Familiarity with working-class/trades culture and hockey is an asset.

The Cathedral has 3 distinct congregations: an English congregation of about 20, an Inuktitut morning congregation of about 75, and an Inuktitut evening (prayer & praise) congregation of about 50; St. Simon’s in Apex offers a Sunday evening Sunday School program when volunteers are available, but doesn’t have a regular worshipping community at this time.  One united vestry works together to provide oversight.

The minister on mission serves as part of a team including a yet-to-be-appointed Priest-in-Charge, a part-time Office Administrator, a bilingual Suffragan Bishop who is resident in Iqaluit and assists when available, two non-stipendiary Deacons (Inuk and English), and a team of experienced and dedicated Inuktitut-speaking lay leaders. This minister on mission would assist with the overall services of the Cathedral (including serving on the ministry rotation for all services, and taking a share of the daily office, hospital/prison visitations, and office hours), but would take primary preaching and teaching responsibility for the services of the English congregation.

Moving expenses will be provided; immigration support is limited to the provision of a sponsorship letter, with the caveat that Nunavut does not offer a territorial immigration sponsorship program and required testing and health exams cannot happen in Iqaluit. Those seeking permanent residency or citizenship through this position are warned that it will be expensive, difficult, frustrating, and distracting.
