Resources for Ministry: Recommendations from the Archdeacon Healing for Every Struggle: Celebrate Recovery.
Everyone needs support at one time or another. Fallen human nature and life in a sinful world means that we all struggle with something that keeps us from knowing the wholeness, healing, and peace that God wants us to know as His children by grace. Sometimes it’s an addiction, but anger, gluttony, unhealthy relationships, or pain from a difficult past are all struggles that God can free us from.
Celebrate Recovery uses the proven 12-Step structure of AA and NA, but fills the whole healing process with scripture, as we learn to depend on Jesus Christ, the one true and living “higher power”.
It takes a small but committed team to run Celebrate Recovery in your church. It takes people who are ready to be honest with one another about their own imperfections, and who are serious about confidentiality.
Unlike AA, each weekly meeting begins with worship. Bible-based lessons are provided for the leader to read, or the lessons can be ordered on a set of DVDs to play on a screen. Then there’s a time to share personal struggles and celebrate each other’s progress in a small group before lifting up one another in prayer. A set of journals act as a guide for those who are ready to get serious about their healing and want to work through their struggles, hurt, and pain together with an accountability partner.
If you’d like to start a Celebrate Recovery group in your church, let me know! There’s a cost associated with getting the materials, but a couple of churches have offered to help if a congregation can’t afford the program.
