The Opportunity of a Lifetime: A summer intern’s reflection on ministry in Yellowknife

By Jackson Watts, summer intern at Holy Trinity Yellowknife (2025) My time in Yellowknife was a great blessing and I’m sure I will never forget the experience. As I told many people in Yellowknife, people down south know very little about the north in general. Since I told my friends and family I was doing an internship in the Diocese of The Arctic, I believe … Continue reading The Opportunity of a Lifetime: A summer intern’s reflection on ministry in Yellowknife

By the Rev. Nick Kigeak, Arviat From August the 30th to September 2nd, I and a team of 14 others ran the Teens Encounter Christ program. Because of Covid the last TEC was in 2019, and it’s been really good to have it back up and running again. Teens Encounter Christ

Have you heard of Teens Encounter Christ? TEC is a life-changing program where youth come together with young adults to learn what it means to be a follower of Jesus, trusting that they will truly have an encounter with Jesus over the course of the long-weekend retreat. This program began in the ecumenical movement in the 1970s, and was once popular across Canada, though it … Continue reading Teens Encounter Christ

The importance of the Church in a young person’s life

Personal reflections from our Youth Coordinator By Nick A. Kigeak, Diocesan Youth Coordinator The first 25 years of my life was spent in Gjoa Haven, Nunavut. Growing up, the Anglican Church of the Messiah was always very active, with everything from youth nights to gospel concerts to bring people together and share the Good News of Jesus. I remember as a little boy, my mother … Continue reading The importance of the Church in a young person’s life

“You are making a difference!”

In the Fall issue of the Arctic News, churches and readers were encouraged to look for ways to start youth programs and engage with youth in our communities. With this in mind, staff writer the Rev. Francis Delaplain thought he should have a conversation with a young person about the role youth programs have played in their life! “You are making a difference!” A young … Continue reading “You are making a difference!”

Ministering to the youth of Kangiqsualujjuaq

St Paul talks about us all running our own race, about the need for discipline, development of endurance, and for each of us to give witness to what we can accomplish. Sports and exercise is a popular and proven way to reach out to youth and children. Like other places, here in Kangiqsualujjuaq Quebec, we have school teams, and hockey, as well as various individuals leading and teaching different sport activities. Continue reading Ministering to the youth of Kangiqsualujjuaq

New Kids’ Club reaches children in Fort Smith

Though St. John’s in Fort Smith, NWT currently finds itself without any clergy, that didn’t deter a couple of dedicated volunteers from making sure the children in the community have a safe place to gather, to know that they are loved, and that they matter to God. Lay Leader Whitney MacDonald (who was recently licensed back in May) took the lead on the new “Kids’ … Continue reading New Kids’ Club reaches children in Fort Smith

New Sunday School Resources!

Sunday School is the farthest-reaching ministry your church can do. Reach a child with the Gospel when they’re 5, and they might go on to impact hundreds more over their lifetime! To ease the burden on teachers, the Diocese has purchased a group subscription to two different programs from Disciplr. Teachers can access the materials electronically, or for communities without internet, we can print and … Continue reading New Sunday School Resources!
