Originally built in 1930 at a cost of $10,000, St. Luke’s Mission Hospital provided healthcare to the Inuit of Baffin Island until 1972, when it was replaced by government-run nursing station. It then served as the home of the Arthur Turner Training School, training several generations of Arctic clergy between 1972 and when the buildings were finally declared beyond repair in 2007. Expanded several times … Continue reading Hamlet of Pangnirtung demolishes the former St.Luke’s Hospital and former home of ATTS

ᐱᓕᒻᒪᒃᓴᕐᓂᖅ – What Pilimmaksarniq means

“Training” is a key word for the Diocese of The Arctic. This is nothing new – in fact, the primary task of the first Arctic missionaries was to train Inuit and Gwich’in leaders to go from camp to camp spreading the Good News among their neighbours! For decades, much of the church looked to “traditional”, university- based seminary programs to train leaders; these have their … Continue reading ᐱᓕᒻᒪᒃᓴᕐᓂᖅ – What Pilimmaksarniq means

News and Moves around the Diocese

The Rev. Esau Tatatoapik has moved to the parish of Puvirnituq and takes up the role of Regional Dean for the Hudson Coast. The Rev. The New England Company grant for Deacon’s Training

The Deacons’ Training Program is a great success already. “This is what we’ve needed all along” says Bishop David Parsons. “Don’t get me wrong, we certainly hope to continue the full 2-year in-person program in Iqaluit, and even expand that to the Western Arctic… but this is like playing catch-up, we need to train a lot of people all at once!” The innovative curriculum has … Continue reading The New England Company grant for Deacon’s Training

St. John’s Legacy Foundation grants $15,775 for ATTS

“God will provide all that we need” is a daily refrain in the Synod Office of the Diocese of The Arctic. Big plans. Big challenges. The most spread-out diocese in the world, with most churches only accessible by planes travelling into small airports dotting the Arctic coast. “By any human reasoning, we shouldn’t be able to afford to do the work God gave us to … Continue reading St. John’s Legacy Foundation grants $15,775 for ATTS
